What is a doula?

A doula provides emotional, physical, informational and continuous (EPIC) support to a birthing person during their labor. Doulas support the birthing person unconditionally, no matter what decisions that person makes while in labor. In addition, doulas can take on the role of advocacy, specifically in supporting the birthing person in their right to make decisions about their own body. Having the continuous support of a doula during labor has shown to decrease cesarean rates and the use of medications for pain relief (Evidence Based Birth). In order for the birthing person to cope with stress and labor during child birth, it is essential that they find relaxation, rhythm and rituals that guide their contractions forward. The pregnant person can most often find these 3 R’s when they feel safe and supported (Penny Simkin). A doula can help to encourage the movements, sounds and energy that the birthing person is engaging in order to get her deeper into her own body.

As your doula, Sara will help to create the birthing environment that most resonates with you and your birth plan. Whether it is dimmed lights, specific essential oils, or a labor playlist that centers your mind and body, she will help to make sure you feel most comfortable in the space. She will make sure that you (and/or your partner!) feel informed and empowered throughout your labor and delivery to make the decisions that make the most sense for you and your family to deliver your baby and get them into your arms.
